Cows are interesting animals. Did you know they burp a lot? When cows eat grass, they make a gas called methane. This gas is not good for our planet. It makes the Earth hotter. Why does this happen? Inside a cow’s stomach, there are very tiny living things. These are called microbes. Some microbes help the cow eat food. One special microbe has a tiny part inside it. This part makes hydrogen gas. Then, other microbes use the hydrogen to make methane. One cow can make 100 kilograms of methane every year! That is a lot of gas. Scientists want to help the cows and the Earth. They are looking for ways to make less methane. These tiny microbes are very important for our world. Maybe one day you can study them in a science lab!
